Rememberance and semantics

Amid all the usual eloquence of Rememberance Day, one of the things that continually bugs me is the phrase "gave their lives."

Now, some of those who died did give their lives - voluntary acts of self-sacrifice for others. I'm fairly sure the vast majority lost their lives instead - despite their best efforts to avoid doing so.

To me, to ignore the distinction between them is to take something away from what are two quite different, but equally heroic acts of bravery.
