Egg freshness

A question for the non-UK or well-travelled among you.

In the UK, eggs with the Lion Mark have a best-before date that's timed at no more than 27 days after laying. Interestingly, that's more lax than Delia says in her How To Cook volume - she says it's exactly 21 days after laying.

How widespread is this? Anything equivalent for the US, for example?
