There was a story in the Metro earlier this week about a potential shake-up in the laws concerning prostitution. Apparently, they're considering changing the laws so that clients will also be liable for prosecution under a new offence.

It's about time.

I was amazed when I first learned that you could be prosecuted for selling favours, but not for purchasing them. Unbelievably hypocritical. I'm not sure whether this is a result of the eons of misogynistic attitudes (the women "tempt", "lock up your daughters," etc.) or a more direct result of self-interest, namely that the various law-makers responsible have availed themselves of such services from time to time, or know people who do.

Either way, I hope this changes. If it's illegal to sell something, it should be illegal to buy it, too.
